I am not sure if I have understood your query properly, however if you mean to ask about making Mandatory, you can simply make the field mandatory using KUT(Key User Tool)/Adaptation mode and you do not have to maintain any code for handling it. User will get an error if he tries to save the object without the mandatory field being filled.
