Personas 1.0 SP 01 is ancient and has been out of maintenance for quite a while.
Please upgrade your SP level to the latest which is 05 for version 1.0 and re-try.
As for not having a common role for users who should be in a group: that will certainly complicate the situation. Since mass group maintenance relies on PFCG roles, there is no automatic way to include users and maintain Personas groups - all you can do is manual group maintenance.
